The US state of Maryland was once the market leader for rye whiskey. In 1910, at least 44 distilleries produced rye whiskey there, 21 of them in Baltimore alone. During Prohibition and World War I, most distilleries switched production to ethanol. Kentucky then became the leading producer. The Sagamore Distillery was founded in 2015 by Kevin Plank in Baltimore to bring Rye Whiskey back to Maryland.
