English Version

Uhh my friends I have been looking forward to this since Mate sent me the package. Many thanks again for this.

Finishes for home? Is that possible? Yes, Soak Staves offers you a possibility and I am already curious how it will influence the Whisky.

What is it about?

In principle, you can use this to give your own spirits a finish. I have "Peat", "Rum" and "Sherry" at my disposal. And the whole thing should happen in just under 2 weeks.

How does it work?

It's more than simple:

1. pour the spirit of your choice, in my case whisky of course, into the bottles supplied.

2. wait 2 weeks, shake the bottles from time to time (lightly)

3. be surprised how the taste has changed.

My selection

Now you see here 2 whiskies (Paddy and Glen Grant), which I personally don't necessarily like to drink pure. I am very curious to see what the "Peat" and "Sherry" finishes will do to them.

I like the Laphroaig in itself, but I think it gets an extra kick with the "rum" finish.

The finishes

Peat: additional oak aroma, notes of vanilla and light smoky flavour, peaty finish.

Rum: oak and toast flavours, vanilla notes, floral and fruity rum flavours, sweet finish

Sherry: oak flavours, vanilla notes, dried fruits and berries, sweet, fruity finish.

After 2 weeks

Rum with Laphroaig : let's start with the whisky, which I also naturally like. You know I love rum finishes and I definitely like the recommendation to try this finish with a smoky whisky. We got a nice refinement here with more vanilla and fruity notes.

So let’s go to the two whiskies that I took especially because I don't really like them that much:

Sherry with Paddy: Please have a look at the darker colour. For me, the sherry notes come out well, giving the otherwise rather boring Paddy a good and more interesting note with berries and oak flavours.

Peat with Glen Grant: of course, you can't expect a smoke bomb with a Peat finish at home. But you can clearly taste nice subtle smoke notes - in combination with the Glen Grant well done also in combination with additional vanilla notes.

Conclusion

Definitely an exciting story to tell at home, to experiment a bit with your whiskies.

For me, the experiment was successful anyway, I told you that I took 2 whiskies that are not necessarily my favourites and bingo - I can definitely drink them now. Of course, you shouldn't expect any major changes in taste for the finishes at home - you're not creating a new whisky - but that's not what it's all about and that should be clear.

The core of the actual whisky remains, just gets an additional kick. The promise to refine the whisky is definitely kept and it is fun to try out a little. As a gift and for yourself - you will make whisky friends, or those who want to become ones, happy.
